Editors work on deal for press regulation

5 December 2012

Newspaper editors were meeting today in a bid to thrash out the details of a new form of self-regulation for the press.

David Cameron has warned that the “clock is ticking” and told editors to come up with a clear “direction of travel” if they are to avoid a law regulating press freedom.

At a meeting yesterday in Downing Street the Prime Minister told senior press figures they must act fast to convince politicians and the public that Lord Justice Leveson’s call for statutory underpinning — which he does not favour — is not necessary.

Mr Cameron warned that he could be forced to legislate if the industry fails to reform itself.

At this morning’s meeting the editors agreed to the broad principles of the Leveson report.

It is understood that despite there being some technical work still to do in terms of agreeing details they are moving towards a swift solution.

There have been suggestions that detailed proposals for a form of self-regulation could be ready within a fortnight.
