Eight penguins have been killed by a fox at Surrey’s Chessington World of Adventures.

Three baby and five adult Humboldt penguins were killed by the “urban fox” which went on a rampage in the water enclosure.

Another penguin was also injured but has since recovered.

Lisa Britton, one of the zoo managers, said the fox infiltrated Penguin Bay overnight at the end of June.

“We are investigating why this happened,” she said. “As Penguin Bay was only built in 2015 and had special measures put in place specifically to deter foxes and therefore we are shocked and saddened by this news”.

The remaining 20 penguins have been relocated to another part of the zoo while security is upped at Penguin Bay.

Ms Britton added she hopes to reopen the enclosure as soon as possible.
