An elderly woman had her arm ripped off in a freak accident after she got it trapped in her car window.

The 78-year-old leaned into her car, parked outside her home in Penmar Close, Hayle, to turn the ignition on and close the electric window.

But the vehicle was in gear and lurched forward, trapping her arm and ripping it off above the elbow.

The pensioner, from Cornwall, was airlifted to hospital in Plymouth at 3:50pm on Saturday.

Paramedics recovered her arm and it was hoped surgeons would be able to reattach it.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "What appears to have happened is that she leant into the car to close the electric windows.

"She turned on the ignition to get the power for the electric windows, but unfortunately the car was in gear and lurched forward - trapping her hand or arm.

"In the process of doing that, it has taken her arm off."

Police said the pensioner had suffered "life-changing injuries" but it was hoped she would make a good recovery.
