Piers Morgan was questioned under caution over alleged phone hacking during his time as editor of the Daily Mirror, it has been revealed.

The British journalist, who now hosts his own talk show for American television channel CNN, was interviewed by detectives in December.

Scotland Yard would not name the presenter but said a 48-year-old man had been questioned by police investigating the illegal interception of voicemails by Mirror group journalists on December 6 and was not arrested.

Morgan told the Guardian newspaper today: "In early November I was asked to attend an interview by officers from Operation Weeting when I was next in the UK.

"This was further to a full witness statement I had already freely provided. I attended that interview as requested on 6 December 2013."

He has previously denied any knowledge of phone hacking at the tabloid newspaper.

Giving evidence via video link to the Leveson Inquiry in December 2011, he also said he had not been "directly involved" in the use of private investigators while serving as editor between 1995 and 2004.
