A former Morrissey fan has planned an anti-racism party a stone's throw from one of his gigs in protest at his support for far-right leader Tommy Robinson.
The Smiths singer made comments earlier this month condemning what he described as the “shocking treatment” of Robinson, who was jailed for 13 months after being found in contempt of court.
Morrissey also outlined his support for right-wing party For Britain – led by former Ukip candidate Anne Marie Waters.
His comments, which are the latest in a series of controversial remarks, sparked outrage among his fans who have now planned to ambush his Manchester gig on July 8.
Ex-Hacienda DJ Dave Haslam said on his website he organised the event “in response to Morrissey’s divisive views, and his support for the far right”.
“Morrissey has attracted controversy for a host of remarks and opinions – including undermining the #metoo campaign and claiming there’s ‘no difference between eating animals and paedophilia’,” he wrote.
“Manchester is our home. It’s a city built on immigration, a city with an amazing legacy of great bands and wonderful clubs.
“Morrissey hasn’t lived in the city for thirty years – he lives abroad in tax exile – and has now joined the ranks of various right-wing politicians, tax exiles, tabloids, and media hate-slingers seeking to divide our community."
The “One Nation Under A Groove” protest party is due to be held at Revolution bar in the city from 3pm until midnight.
Morrissey fans are invited to attend either before or after the concert and there is no entry fee, although donations will go to the charity Love Music Hate Racism.
