Explosions heard as fire breaks out in car park at Gatwick Airport's North Terminal

Explosions were heard at Gatwick Aiport's North Terminal this evening after a fire broke out in the car park.

Flames were seen erupting from a car just after 8.20pm as airline passengers passed through the airport in West Sussex.

Fire crews from West Sussex Fire and Rescue were sent to tackle the blaze and access to the car park was temporarily blocked off.

A video shared on Facebook by witness Graeme St Clair showed the flaming car on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park.

He wrote online: "I got in just as it started. No one else got in after me to either drop off or pick up. I managed to get out ok with my passengers.

"There is a massive queue to get in there now."

A Gatwick Airport spokesman said the fire was "not being treated as a terrorist attack".

He said shuttle services were suspended for 18 minutes between the north and south terminals while fire crews worked to contain the flames. The fire, which is under investigation, was reported to have been contained by 9pm.

He said: "There were no injuries and no one suffered any smoke inhalation."

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "We are not treating the incident as suspicious. Someone parked their car, it was smoking when they got in the airport and then the fire broke out."
