Mothers today staged a mass breastfeeding protest as part of the Extinction Rebellion demonstrations.

Hundreds of women fed their babies outside the QEII centre near Parliament Square - where Boris Johnson was announced as the Conservative Party leader -from 10.30am this morning.

Lorna Greenwood, 32, who organised the event, said: “We’re bringing the youngest lives who will be affected by the climate crisis to the heart of Westminster.”

One mother held a sign that read: "Suck on this".

Another mother, Anna Warrington, 36, arrived to feed her nine-month-old twins, Mathilda and Aubrey, who she carried in a double sling.

Ms Warrington, a doctor from London, said: “Women like me with little babies have come along to highlight the crisis the planet is in, that our children have to live through.

“In 50 years our children are going to inherit a planet that is so different. They can’t have the lives and the childhood that I had.”

An event page for the action said that breast and bottle feeding mothers were joining "the front line" of the movement.

"Mothers will do everything they can to protect their children", it said.

"Ecological devastation and the growing climate emergency means our babies' lives are at risk

"We are reaching the point where it may be too late to save them.

"We are here to demand that our government acts now to protect our babies."

This is the third day of the planned two weeks of climate change protests.

Over the past two days, more than 500 people have been arrested. The Met have issued a condition of public assembly instructing protesters to assemble in the pedestrianised area in Trafalgar Square only.

In response, the group asked its members to refuse to comply with bail conditions with the intention of filling London's jail cells to breaking point.
