Facebook has teamed up with internet phone company Skype to roll out video calls on the social networking site.

The device will enable users - now said to number around 750 million - to hold conversations with friends as they would on the phone but with the added bonus of being able to see the people they talk to.

Video calls will be free and will not require users to memorise screen names or email addresses.

The social networking site has also announced improvements which mean users can create instant "group chats" if they want to quickly message a small number of their friends.

Video calling is expected to be available in the next few weeks.
