The family of two brothers who were swept into sea while fishing in Cornwall have told how they are “living a nightmare” after the “freak accident".

Their comments came as police confirmed Charles and Robert Allen were the two men knocked into the water off Treyarnon Bay near Padstow on Monday afternoon.

The keen fishermen, from Bristol, were on holiday in Cornwall with family when the tragedy happened.

Mr Allen, 21, was rescued within minutes of a 999 call being made but was pronounced dead at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

Despite extensive searches by coastguard rescue teams, police and Padstow RNLI Lifeboat, Dr Allen, 30, has not yet been found.

Anthony and Margaret Allen, parents of both men, said: "Our sons were happy, kind, intelligent, loving brothers and we are in a state of shock at what has happened.

"We are living a nightmare that you would never want to happen to anyone.

"We are praying Robert is located so that we can say goodbye to our sons together.

"Charles was a hard-working loving son and Robert was an associate of Bath University, specialising in 3D printing.

"They both loved being part of our large family and had recently become uncles.

"They took their fishing seriously and would study timetables and forecasts before venturing out.

"They were experienced fishermen but a freak accident has changed our lives forever and it is difficult to find words to explain our pain."

They thanked rescue teams involved in recovering Mr Allen from the water and searching for Dr Allen.
