12 April 2012

A football supporter who died after an incident at a Premier League game has been named by police.

John Steven Taylor, 30, from Avallon Way in Darwen, Lancashire, died just before 2am in hospital.

Mr Taylor, a Blackburn Rovers supporter, was found unconscious on the concourse of the south stand at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium just after half-time during the clash with Blackburn.

He was treated at the scene for a head injury and cardiac arrest, then rushed to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire but police confirmed he died at 1.55am.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: "A Home Office post-mortem was carried out earlier today and the cause of death was due to a head injury."

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said a 25-year-old Preston man arrested in connection with the incident has been bailed pending further inquiries.

A police spokesman said investigations were still ongoing and could not confirm or deny whether reports the incident involved a bin were true.

Chief Inspector Adrian Roberts, match commander at the game which saw Stoke beat Blackburn 3-0, said there were just over 1,300 Blackburn fans at the game, and no Stoke fans were involved.

Blackburn Rovers said the club was shocked and saddened to learn of season ticket holder Mr Taylor's death.

Chairman John Williams said: "This is a tragic situation and our thoughts are with John's family at this deeply distressing time."
