Fans question Tennis player Andy Murray's Centre Court 'snub'
12 April 2012

Murraymania has hit Wimbledon - with fans questioning why their hero was not playing on Centre Court.

Andy Murray, the 23-year-old British No 1, is often granted a spot at the All England Club's premier venue to please his army of supporters.

But as he kicks off his bid for a first Grand Slam title, he has been shifted on to Court 1 for his showdown against Jan Hajek.

Union flag-clad fan Helen Hogg, 59, from Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, said: "It definitely seems a snub.

"We've been camping out all night to see Murray. He and we deserve an outing on the top court."

Ms Hogg, a mother of three, said she "froze and had less than three hours' sleep" to secure seats to watch Murray - the world number four - at her sixth Wimbledon.

Peter Dawson, 41, from Ilkley, West Yorkshire, said: "It does seem a shame that Murray has not been given the best court - but Rafael Nadal is also playing so I think the bosses were afraid of giving our man special treatment. I still think they should have done though.

"I think Murray can go all the way - he just needs to get a few wins under his belt and calm his nerves."

The Scot insists he has what it takes to end Britain's 74-year wait for a male Grand Slam champion - despite the extra pressure after England's dismal football performances at the World Cup.

With temperatures rising in the blistering sunshine on Tuesday morning, British fans were also cheering Anne Keothavong, Jamie Baker and Heather Watson, who begin their campaigns.
