A man has died after being mauled by a dog in a park in a town near Portsmouth.

The horror attack happened on Wednesday at the recreation ground in Fareham’s Hillson Drive at 10.25am.

A 34 year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Hampshire Police said they had arrested a 20 year-old man from Fareham on suspicion of being the owner or person in charge of a dangerously out of control dog causing injury resulting in death.

He has been released from custody without charge but remains under investigation. The dog was also secured and removed from the scene.

Officers said: “We are speaking to people in the area and carrying out other lines of enquiry to establish how the man died.”

His family has been informed.

The tragedy comes after other dogs mauling incidents across the country in recent weeks.

Last month, a mum was mauled to death by her dogs at home in Rotherham, Yorkshire, with her boyfriend suffering injuries to his face, hands and chest as he tried to pull the animals off her.

Meanwhile, a dog, thought to be a pitbull, was destroyed by police after biting a girl and a pizza delivery man in Rochdale last week.
