Fire-fighters battle hotel blaze

12 April 2012

Fire-fighters are battling a blaze which has already destroyed a five-storey hotel at a popular tourist destination.

The 59-room Royal Gate House hotel on the sea front at Tenby, West Wales, was engulfed by flames after a fire broke out at around 11pm on Saturday night.

The blaze has also spread to an adjoining tanning studio and is threatening a cinema.

No-one has been injured in the fire but 35 people have been evacuated by police from the Lion Hotel and nearby flats.

Fire-fighters have been prevented from entering the building of the Royal Gate House hotel, which was closed for the winter season, after its roof partially collapsed.

More than 120 fire-fighters from the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are currently trying to bring the blaze under control.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Phil Bailey said: "This is a serious fire which involves a five-storey hotel.

"Fire crews are currently involved in creating a fire break to try and prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining properties in the area."

He added: "Fire-fighting conditions are proving difficult due to the unsafe structure of the building and the close proximity of other properties.

"A water relay has been set up and we are currently using four jets and two monitors to deal with the blaze."
