The bodies of two people have been found in a swollen river, as dozen of flood warnings remain in place following the worst September storm for 30 years.

A member of the public spotted a woman's body shortly after 5pm yesterday on a sandbank in the River Clywedog, near Wrexham, North Wales, which was swollen yesterday following heavy rain.

Police said the woman was a 27-year-old, believed to be from the Wrexham area. A second body, that of a 25-year-old local man, was found in the river at around midnight.

Heavy downpours since Sunday have swollen rivers and flooded hundreds of homes and businesses across parts of the UK, while rail and road networks have been swamped by high water levels.

This morning there were 44 flood warnings in place, mostly in northern England, and 64 less serious flood alerts. People were being urged to stay away from floodwater.

The worst-hit area in the past 24 hours has been Yorkshire, where the Environment Agency said around 300 homes have been flooded as water moved down the river system.

The York and Selby areas continued to cause the most concern to agencies and soldiers were deployed overnight to help with a sandbagging operation in the village of Cawood, while a fire crew from Lincolnshire was brought in with high-volume pumping equipment.

In York, the peak flow of the River Ouse passed this morning around 16ft (5m) higher than the summer average.

A number of people have had to be rescued from floodwater, and carers had to be taken by boat to a residential home to administer medication to elderly residents.

Further north, the Highways Agency said a small section of the northbound carriageway of the A1 remained closed in the Catterick area.
