Freezing weather affects motorists

The freezing weather took its toll on motorists with the AA breakdown recovery service expecting to attend around 20,000 call-outs - a 250% increase on a normal Saturday.

The country's biggest breakdown organisation said breakdowns were being reported at a rate of 2,000 every hour with the snow and icy conditions combining with the last Christmas shopping weekend and the start of the Christmas getaway.

It also dealt with a lot of home start call-outs, with many people calling for a tow off their driveway due to the snow and ice.

Stewart Topp, AA patrol of the year, said: "Conditions on the roads are as bad, if not worse, than yesterday with the snow turning to ice in many areas and further snowfalls expected later.

"Many minor roads are treacherous - they're more like skating rinks - so unless you really have no choice, we would advise against travelling today and wait for conditions to improve.

"If you do venture out, just do everything slowly - keep your speed right down, avoid sudden manoeuvres, and maintain a larger gap between you and the car in front, as stopping distances can increase tenfold on snow and ice.

"Also, make sure you're properly equipped for the conditions, even if you're not travelling far - we're still hearing reports of drivers not even carrying a warm coat."

Due to the exceptional conditions on the roads, the AA is advising that there may be a longer wait for assistance, as it prioritises service for those in vulnerable positions.

The AA said it had extra patrols out on duty and was putting extra snow-busting Land Rovers in place to rescue people in inaccessible areas.
