Funeral of murdered Casey allowed

12 April 2012

A coroner gave permission for the funeral of two-year-old Casey Leigh Mullen to take place.

The toddler was found in a pool of blood at her home in Oak Tree Crescent, Gipton, Leeds, on February 11.

Coroner David Hinchliff issued a burial order and an interim death certificate at the opening of her inquest in Leeds. Her funeral is expected to take place next week.

The brief circumstances of her death were outlined during a 10-minute hearing at Leeds Coroner's Court.

Detective Superintendent Steve Payne said a murder investigation was launched after her body was discovered. He said a post-mortem examination showed that the youngster died from compression of the neck.

Her uncle, 21-year-old Michael Mullen, will go on trial later this year charged with her rape and murder.

It was revealed that a second post-mortem took place on the child following a request by Mullen's defence team.

Mr Hinchliff adjourned the inquest until after the criminal proceedings have been completed.

Mullen, of Lawrence Road, Leeds, was remanded in custody last month and the Recorder of Leeds, Judge Norman Jones QC, told him his trial date had been set for July 2.

He is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court again for a plea and case management hearing on April 16.
