Gay couples celebrate anniversary

12 April 2012

One of the first gay couples to 'tie the knot' in England will be celebrating their first anniversary by attending another civil partnership.

Thousands of gay weddings have taken place since the Civil Partnership Act came into effect a year ago in England and Wales.

Gino and Mike Meriano were one of three couples who had a joint ceremony in Brighton register office last December.

This year the couple, from Weybridge, Surrey, have headed back to the self-styled gay capital for a "chilled time" and a friend's big day.

Gino, 43, who runs a gay wedding planning company called Pink Weddings, said they were "completely honoured" to be one of the first couples to have a civil partnership. "To go down as part of history makes it even more special," he added.

Of their first year of 'marriage' Gino said: "It's been fantastic, absolutely incredible. I can't even believe it has been a year. It's a proud moment."

It has not all been plain sailing: shortly before their civil partnership they received a death threat, and recently burglars stole their engagement and wedding rings.

But the couple have tracked down the jeweller who made the original rings and who will now recreate them, Gino said.

Gino, who had been with Mike, 46, for seven years before their official ceremony, said: "That moment for every couple that now signs the register, that's another moment in history.

"Every name is a piece of history, added to a list that says we're entitled to our rights. It's a massive move forward."
