A pensioner who was shot with a crossbow as he fixed a satellite dish has died in hospital from the "horrendous injuries he sustained", police said today.

Gerald Corrigan was struck with a crossbow bolt outside his home at 12.30am on April 19.

The bolt travelled through a significant part of the 74-year-old's upper body, narrowly missing his heart and then passing through his right arm.

North Wales Police confirmed Mr Corrigan died on Saturday, just over three weeks after he was shot in Holyhead, Anglesey.

DCI Brian Kearney said: "This is a truly shocking case and our thoughts are with Gerald's family and friends at this very sad time.

"The family continue to be supported by specially-trained family liaison officers."

The force said it is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police have previously said one line of inquiry is that Mr Corrigan may have been accidentally shot by a lamper – rogue night-time hunters who use bright lights to target animals.

Mr Corrigan worked as a lecturer in photography and video in Lancashire prior to retiring to Anglesey more than 20 years ago. He had a keen interest in nature.

Anyone with information relating to the investigation is asked to contact detectives at Llangefni CID on 101, via the live webchat quoting reference number X052857 or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
