Police in Germany are trying to discover a teenager's motive for gunning down students at his former school in a rampage that left 15 people dead.
Seventeen-year-old Tim Kretschmer's victims were primarily female - eight of the nine students he killed were girls and all three teachers who died were women - but it is not yet known if this is an indication of his motive.
He killed three men as he attempted to flee the school, near Stuttgart.
The dark-haired teen apparently took the 9mm Beretta weapon from his father's collection of 15 firearms along with a "multitude of ammunition", police said. His father was a member of the local gun club and kept the weapons locked away except for the pistol, which was kept in the bedroom.
He was a below-average student at the school, and a friend said he claimed fellow students had mocked him and teachers ignored him.
After his rampage in the school, Kretschmer ran to Winnenden and shot two people walking by a psychiatric clinic, killing one and wounding the other.
He then hijacked a car and forced the driver to head south while threatening his life from the back seat, triggering a land and air manhunt involving 700 police officers and four helicopters.
The driver swerved off the road to avoid a police checkpoint and managed to escape, while the suspect fled from the car into an industrial area in Wendlingen, about 24 miles from Winnenden.
He entered a car dealership, where he shot and killed his final victims -- a salesman and a man shopping for a car -- and then went back outside.
He opened fire on police swarming the area, who shot back and hit the suspect. He fell wounded to the ground but got back up and fled, but was found dead soon afterwards having apparently killed himself.
