Giant steel tubes are being used to form the basis of a temporary crossing after a bridge on the world cycling championship route was destroyed by floods.

The bridge over Cogden Beck in the Yorkshire Dales, was swept away as a torrent of bad weather hit the region on June 30 and 31.

The crossing was part of the UCI Road World Championship route and a temporary bridge and road will now be erected in its place.

On Tuesday, two re-purposed steel tubes were lowered into place to form the basis of the new structure.

They will form the basis of a temporary crossing where the bridge was swept away during floods.

If building work is successful, this will help ensure that the UCI Road World Championship, which is due to start on September 22, will not have to be re-routed.

After the event is finished, it is hoped that the traditional Dales masonry bridge will be rebuilt next year to replace the destroyed version and the temporary crossing.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Don Mackenzie, the executive member for highways, said: "The damage caused by the unprecedented rainfall in parts of Swaledale has caused unimaginable upheaval to communities in the area.

"We know how vital these roads and bridges are to everyday life for those living in the affected areas, so we are delighted to report we have managed to make so much progress in such a short space of time."

Work will be done to repair the B6270 road, which links Grinton with the rest of the Dales but was left impassable by the flooding, the council said.
