12 April 2012

A 16-year-old girl has been shot in the head.

The youngster has been taken to hospital where her condition is described as critical.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said they were called to an address in Ashover Avenue, Gorton, Manchester, shortly after 6am following reports of a shooting.

The girl, who has not been named, was found with a gunshot wound to the head.

A 19-year-old man was arrested nearby and remains in police custody where he is being questioned.

Superintendent Simon Barraclough, of GMP's South Manchester division, said: "I would like anyone that witnessed the incident or who knows anything about what happened to contact us.

"This would appear to be an isolated incident, however there will be extra patrols in the area to reassure residents."

Anyone with any information can call Longsight CID on 0161 856 4166 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
