Girl remanded over sister's murder

12 April 2012

A schoolgirl has appeared in court charged with the murder of her 16-year-old sister.

The 14-year-old appeared before magistrates at Bradford Youth Court accused of stabbing her elder sister at their home in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was remanded into the care of the local authority. She will appear before Calderdale Youth Court in Halifax on April 4.

Chairman of the bench Bernard Beverley told the girl she was not allowed any contact with her mother, either directly or indirectly, unless under the supervision of the youth offending team.

She is also forbidden from entering the Calderdale area unless she is attending court or visiting her solicitor.

Police and paramedics were called to an address in the Ovenden area of Halifax on Monday night.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said two teenage girls were found with stab wounds.

They were both taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital, where the 16-year-old later died.

Her younger sister was later released from hospital and taken to a police station.

During the 10-minute hearing she spoke only to confirm her name, age and address, and that she understood the proceedings.
