Two suspects have been arrested after a 57-year-old man was killed while “trying to stop his car from being stolen” in Manchester, police say.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called to reports of an unresponsive male on Olympic Street, Beswick, at just before 11am on Saturday.

Despite the efforts of members of the public and emergency services at the scene, the victim was pronounced dead.

Officers believed he was hit by a black Land Rover.

On Sunday afternoon a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, and a 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They were held in custody and being questioned by police.

Initial inquiries suggest that the victim was killed trying to stop his car from being stolen, GMP said.

Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Smith said: “At the centre of this investigation is a grieving family, who we will do all we can to get answers for.”

She called for anyone who saw anything suspicious or who witnessed the incident to come forward.
