Greggs has announced it may start selling sushi as part of an overhaul of its menu.

The popular bakers, best known for their sausage rolls, is planning to increase the amount of salads, vegetarian and gluten-free foods it offers after a surge in demand for healthier options.

But chief executive Roger Whiteside said the chain would also consider adding oriental and Mexican cuisine.

Mr Whiteside said: “We’re looking at a number of things, including a gluten-free range and more vegetarian ideas.

“We’re also looking seriously at Mexican food, and it’s not impossible that we’ll see sushi on the menu one day.

“We accept that the trend is moving away from over indulging in things like doughnuts and sausage rolls.

“We have our base, our identity if you like, but the key is to offer a variety of food that everyone can afford.”

But pasty fans have been left unimpressed with the suggestion.

One Twitter used posted: “Greggs wants to start selling sushi. I live in a dystopian hell.”

A Greggs fan said: “Going to Greggs for sushi is like going to the dentist for a hair cut.”

And another added: “Oh Greggs are you sure you want to do sushi? Stick to what you know.”

Mr Whiteside added: “We will always be a bakery and sausage rolls will always be part of that, but we’re trying to leverage that with demand for healthier options.”
