Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt offers junior doctors an 11 per cent pay rise

The move comes as doctors are set to hold a ballot into whether to strike over the proposed Government contracts

Junior doctors will be offered an 11 per cent pay rise by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt in a move designed to avoid strike action.

The offer is set to be announced on Wednesday as part of a raft of concessions to persuade thousands of trainee doctors to vote against strike action when their ballot begins on Thursday.

Young medics reacted furiously when new contracts were proposed by the Health Secretary as part of a push for a seven-day NHS service.

They say the terms are likely to reduce pay rates for working evenings and weekends and change the definition of anti-social hours so that evening shifts on weekdays and Saturday will be classed as normal working hours.

Last month, thousands of doctors held a protest outside Parliament to oppose the offer with many indicating they may be forced to seek work abroad as a result.

Mr Hunt is expected to stress the offered increase in basic pay is more than the 1 per cent rises that public sector workers have been told to expect in the next few years.

Last week, he pledged no junior doctor would be worse off under the new contract.
