UK weather: Brits bask in summer heatwave as mercury set to hit 29C

Britons have flocked to parks and beaches today as days of wind and rain make way for a scorching summer heatwave.

Joggers headed out for early-morning exercise on Tuesday, with the mercury set to creep close to 30C throughout the day.

The UK is set for soaring temperatures this week, reaching as high as 34C, according to Met Office forecasters.

Brits have already begun making the most of the sunshine, heading to riverbanks and lidos to cool off from the heat.

On Tynemouth Pier, in north-east England, a group of early birds were photographed admiring the glowing amber sunrise just before 4.30am.

The hottest day of the year could be recorded several times over as the mercury climbs towards 34Cin the south of the UK by Thursday.

However, the record for the hottest ever June day is unlikely to be threatened, with highs set to fall shy of the 35.6C seen in 1976.

Tuesday is expected to reach a top temperature of around 29C in south-east England, with other parts of the country getting comfortably into the mid 20s, forecasters predict.

With the dry and sunny weather expected to continue, and Boris Johnson set to halve the two-metre social-distancing rule, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant.

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has also warned against starting campfires which can easily get out of control, and to call 999 immediately if you spot a fire.

The NFCC said: “The weather is forecast to improve and, although we’ve had our fair share of rain recently, the risk of wildfires remains.

“These fires are often preventable, so if you are enjoying the countryside please be wildfire-aware and look out for our advice.”
