A Nato helicopter has been shot down in southern Afghanistan

A Nato helicopter has been shot down in southern Afghanistan, killing four American troops.

A spokesman said it went down in Helmand province but that few other details were available.

A spokesman for the provincial government of Helmand province said it crashed in Sangin district after taking ground fire.

Nato confirmed the helicopter had been shot down and that four troops were killed, but said it could not release details of their nationalities.

The Taliban claimed they had shot down the helicopter.
