Which HMV stores are closing? What is Sunrise Records? All you need to know

HMV has closed 27 stores with immediate effect following its sale to Canadian retailer Sunrise Records.

Sunrise will acquire 100 stores across the UK, safeguarding the future of nearly 1,500 staff.

But dozens of unprofitable stores will close, resulting in more than 400 redundancies.

HMV fell into trouble just after the Christmas period, blaming the popularity of streaming sites such as Spotify and the decline of the UK high street.

Doug Putman, 34, bought the Canadian record chain Sunrise Records in 2014 when it had a handful of shops. He has grown it to 80 outlets since, boosted by acquiring HMV's Canadian business in 2017.

Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley had previously expressed ambitions to take over HMV but was surpassed by Sunrise Records.

In a statement announcing the deal, Mr Putman said: “We are delighted to acquire the most iconic music and entertainment business in the UK and add nearly 1,500 employees to our growing team. By catering to music and entertainment lovers, we are incredibly excited about the opportunity to engage customers with a diverse range of physical format content, and to replicate our success in Canada.”
