Illegal drivers held after raid

12 April 2012

Two bus drivers working illegally in Britain were arrested by immigration officials after carrying out raids on their depots, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) said.

One man, from South Africa, was held as he arrived at Arriva's Northfleet depot in Kent after it was claimed he obtained work with a false document.

The unnamed man was issued with a police caution and detained on September 15 until his removal from the UK, a spokesman for the UKBA said.

The second man, Buka Tabengwa, from Zimbabwe, was arrested at the same company's Dartford depot on Tuesday for allegedly securing work with a falsified document.

The UKBA said he was charged with two counts of possessing false identity documents and remanded in custody to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on October 12.

Steps will be taken to remove him from Britain once criminal proceedings have been dealt with.

Sergeant Keith Michel, from the UKBA's joint immigration and crime team in Kent, said: "These arrests and subsequent removal show that we do not tolerate document fraud and treat this type of crime very seriously."

The management of Arriva Buses co-operated with the UKBA and were unaware that the documents provided by the drivers was false, a UKBA spokesman said.
