Impaled teenager dies

12 April 2012

A teenager has died after his leg became impaled on spiked railings.

Steven Whale, 19, from High Wycombe, was found in the early hours of Saturday on a fence at the Buckinghamshire town's All Saints Parish Church, off Castle Street, a police spokeswoman said.

After being freed by fire crews, paramedics took Mr Whale to hospital where he later died, she said.

It is believed Mr Whale was alone climbing over the fence when he fell on to it, impaling his left leg on an iron spike.

Emergency services were called at 1.30am and Buckinghamshire fire service said two crews used hydraulic cutting gear to remove Mr Whale from the fence.

"They made three cuts which left the long section of railing still in the man," a spokesman said.

"I believe he was conscious at the start. He had lost a lot of blood and was in a bad way."

Fire fighters stayed with Mr Whale, supporting his weight in the ambulance and as he went into hospital.

The spokesman added: "These things happen and people walk away afterwards but this had particularly tragic consequences.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
