Plans have been announced to build a memorial for the members and manager of indie band Viola Beach in their home town of Warrington.

Warrington Borough Council has pledged to support a permanent memorial in honour of the band and has set up a fundraising page for people to donate.

Musicians Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin died with their manager Craig Tarry in February when their car plunged more than 80ft into a canal in Sodertalje, Sweden.

Warrington mayor Geoff Settle said: “Families and friends have sought comfort in the thousands of tributes that have poured in through the media, on social media sites and books of condolence.

"We hope that they can continue to seek solace through a permanent tribute to five young men who were set to take on the world."

Relatives of the band members said they hoped the final memorial would “mark Viola Beach's musical impact on the town".

Ben and Sharon Dunne, the family of Mr Reeves, said: "The memorial would give everyone an opportunity to reflect on what might have been but also realise the potential we all have to make amazing things happen."

Jo Dakin, mother of Mr Dakin, added: "A physical memorial will inspire others to be brave enough to follow their dreams and escape the ordinary - just like the band of brothers did."

The fund will remain open until the end of September. To donate visit www.warrington.gov.uk/violabeach.
