Inquest to ask if baby died of MRSA

12 April 2012

An inquest into the death of a day-old baby who was thought to be the youngest victim of the MRSA superbug is due to begin.

Luke Day was 36-hours-old when he died at Ipswich Hospital in February, 2005. It was feared at the time that Luke was the youngest hospital victim of MRSA.

But health experts commissioned to investigate by the hospital later concluded the bug might not have been the cause of his death.

"While MRSA was present, the panel could not say with any certainty that it was the cause of Luke's death," said a report produced by the panel of experts.

"There were several possible causes of his death, for example, damage to Luke's lungs or brain. Another possibility is sudden infant death syndrome.

"However the sad truth is we will never know for sure."

Hospital officials said that regardless of the findings on the inquiry into the cause of Luke's death, there had been "deficiencies" in the care given to him.

An inquest into Luke's death will begin in Ipswich and is expected to last two days.
