The material will be shared with fans over the 12 days of Christmas, starting on December 12 and finishing on Christmas Eve.

In a newsletter to Pottermore readers, fans were promised "brand new writing by JK Rowling and even a new potion or two", according to reports in the Daily Telegraph.

A Pottermore Facebook post said: "With wonderful new writing by J.K. Rowling in Moments from 'Half-Blood Prince', shiny gold Galleons and even a new potion or two, make sure you don’t miss out – just visit pottermore.com and answer our rhyming riddles to unwrap a #PottermoreChristmas surprise every day."

Potter fans welcomed the news in posts on social media, with one simply writing; "Best Christmas ever!"

Earlier this year J. K. Rowling gave her thoughts on hated Hogwarts teacher Dolores Umbridge in a new essay.
