Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn failed to make an uncertain toddler smile during a public visit to Consett in County Durham.

During the trip the politician called on the Government to halt the roll out of the Universal Credit Scheme.

Speaking to local Labour MP Laura Pidock Mr Corbyn expressed concern about a possible six week waiting period for Universal Credit payments, saying this would likely cause “incredible hardship” for many.

After speaking with Citizens Advice staff and claimants about their problems, Mr Corbyn posed for photographs with locals.

But 18-month-old Callum from Lanchester failed to be amused by the politician’s attempts to make him smile and continued to frown throughout.

This was recognised by Corbyn who joked: “Callum looks a bit sad here, he’s against Universal Credit too.”
