Steven Gerrard has apologised for a stamp that saw him sent off within 48 seconds his introduction in Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Anfield.

Gerrard was left out of the starting XI but - with the hosts trailing 1-0 at the break - Brendan Rodgers opted to bring his captain onto the field at the start of the second half.

He told Sky Sports: "I need to accept it, the decision was right. I've let down my team-mates and the supporters. I take full responsibility. I've been in the game long enough when you do something like that. I take full responsibility.

"I don't know what caused it. I don't know. Probably just a reaction to the initial tackle. I shouldn't say more about it really, I've just come out here to apologise to the dressing room and supporters."

Steven Gerrard will miss Liverpool's next three games against Arsenal, Blackburn in the FA Cup and Newcastle.
