UK weather forecast: Severe warnings in place as heavy rain sweeps Britain threatening floods and travel disruption

Brits are braced for downpours, floods and possible travel disruption as heavy rain is set to sweep across the UK throughout the week.

The Met Office has issued several severe weather warnings for rain lasting from early on Monday until midday on Thursday.

Forecasters have warned up to 60mm of rain could fall in the south-east of England on Monday in less than six hours.

Heavy rain will then push north and eastwards up the country, with up to 80mm possible across high ground in the northeast by Wednesday.

"There is a chance that continued periods of heavy rain may lead to localised flooding," the Met Office said.

A yellow warning for rain comes into force from 4am on Monday across much of south and east England.

The Met Office said there is a chance that thunder may develop later in the day over parts of East Anglia and the far south-east of England.

From midnight on Tuesday, another warning for rain has been issued affecting parts of eastern England and extending north-east.

While a third warning is in place across the Midlands and north-east of England from midnight on Wednesday to midday on Thursday.

"There is a chance that heavy prolonged rain could lead to localised flooding and disruption to transport," forecasters said.

The Met Office added: "Whilst some places may miss the worst of the rain, a further 20 to 40 mm could widely fall.

"60 to 80 mm is possible locally across the high ground of northeast England, accompanied by strong to gale force northeasterly winds.

"There is also a chance that thunder may develop later on Thursday in the south of the warning area as the rain moves northward."

It follows a period of unsettled weather in the UK after Storm Miguel swept across the country.

Forecasters had warned the remains of the Spanish storm would be felt during the weekend.

Sunday saw sunny spells and scattered showers across the UK.
