London faces wet, windy bank holiday drowning hopes of weekend scorcher

1/29

Londoners hoping for a sunny bank holiday have had their spirits dampened with wind and rain threatening a weekend washout.

In the lead up to the bank holiday, reports suggested temperatures in the UK would rise above those than Crete, but it is more likely city goers will need brollies than beach towels.

But, it wont be cold. The country’s coldest Early May bank holiday on record was in Cumbria in 1997 with temperatures only reaching 2.1 degrees.

London and the South East will benefit from the warmest temperatures in England with highs of 14 degrees.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said: “The weather is not particularly notable for this time of year but it is a bit of a change from what we have had as of late.

“It has been notably dry throughout April across much of the UK so anything unsettling with strong winds and heavy rain at times is going to be quite different.

“In terms of rainfall it is going to be wet and windy on Monday.”

On Friday night temperatures are to plummet below freezing across parts of London and the south east with lows of minus two degrees overnight.

The weekend is expected to kick off with fresh showers towards the west on Saturday morning with highs of 14 degrees.

Londoners will see a return to clear blue skies on Sunday morning before the sunshine is beaten back by returning clouds in the afternoon.

Monday will see short-lived sunshine in the morning followed by a cloudy afternoon with widespread rain and strong winds.

Rest of the UK also expecting ‘chilly’ temperatures

The UK is to start the bank holiday with chilly temperatures bringing a mix of sunshine, showers and a cold east to north easterly wind.

The north and east will bear the brunt of the wet and wintry weather but showers could become more spread throughout Saturday.

Cloud, rain and stronger winds are expected to follow over the weekend with colder than average temperatures, chilly nights, and some overnight frost in the UK overall.

Over the bank holiday weekend, temperatures will reach highs of 12 degrees in Manchester, Cambridge and Cardiff, 11 degrees in Oxford, and 10 degrees in Cornwall, Liverpool and Newcastle,

In Scotland, Edinburgh and Glasgow will see highs of 10 degrees over the weekend and Aberdeen a mere eight degrees.
