A Londoner who died on holiday in Tenerife after being injured in a brawl at his hotel was today described by his friends as a “brilliant father”.

Daryl Bhandal, 36, from Woolwich, was seriously hurt in the fight between two British couples said to have been sparked after he was hit with a cleaner’s “wet floor” sign.

The father-of-two, a director of building firm Quality Solutions Contracts, was celebrating his birthday when the clash broke out around midnight on Friday at an unnamed hotel in the resort of Puerto de Santiago, in the south west of the island.

He was rushed to a hospital with severe head injuries but pronounced dead at around 3am on Saturday morning.

A 26-year-old man and his girlfriend, both British tourists said to have been involved in the altercation with Mr Bhandal and his partner, have been arrested.

The detained man, who reportedly tried to flee the scene, is understood to have received hospital treatment for minor facial injuries.

His partner was held on suspicion of throwing the wet floor sign at Mr Bhandal during a verbal row which led to the clash.

It is not known at this stage if the four were friends, although they are understood to have jetted to Tenerife the same day just hours before the incident and were staying at the same hotel.

His family were today in Spain but were too distraught to speak about the tragedy, with one family member saying they were attending court proceedings.

Friends today paid tribute on social media.

One friend, Richard Specter, wrote: “RIP Daryl Bhandal.

“Absolute pleasure knowing you. Top bloke and a brilliant father. I know a lot of us are in shock and rightfully so.

“And for everyone paying tributes, I’m sure it’ll be a huge comfort to his family to know he’ll be missed by so many people. Sleep tight big guy.”

Another said of the keep-fit fanatic, who ran a building firm: “Gutted to hear about Daryl Bhandal.

“My thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP mate.”

Graphic designer Brad Mulock added: “Daryl Bhandal. Unbelievable. Totally and utterly unbelievable. RIP mate.”

Another Facebook post, written before the tragedy, revealed how Mr Bhandal had gone out with his young son and daughter on Boxing Day to hand out warm clothes to the homeless, with his company footing the bill.
