London’s National Gallery has been named as the UK’s top museum, but has fallen behind cultural institutions in Europe and the US in the worldwide rankings.
The TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards placed the Trafalgar Square art museum as the seventh best museum in the world, despite taking the top spot in the UK listing.
Worldwide, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York was ranked as number one, with the Musee d’Orsay in Paris coming in at second place.
The Art Institute of Chicago, Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, Musee du Louvre in Paris and State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace in St Petersburg, Russia, were all named in the top six.
In the UK rankings, London boasts five of the country’s top 10 museums, including the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Natural History Museum and Churchill War Rooms.

The top 10 lists are based on an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for museums on the travel planning website over the past year.
