The former British spy at the centre of salacious claims Donald Trump is vulnerable to blackmail has fled his home telling neighbours: “look after my cat”.

Chris Steele left his house in Surrey last night after he was named as the author of the dossier revealing the President-elect spent a night in a Moscow hotel with prostitutes.

It is understood the 52-year-old, who runs a London based intelligence agency, has gone into hiding and fears a backlash from the Kremlin.

A neighbour told the Telegraph: “He asked me to look after his cat as he would be gone for a few days. I’m not sure where he’s gone or how to contact him. I don’t really know much about him except to say hello.”

The report allegedly penned by the former M16 officer contains compromising claims about Mr Trump’s sex life and states that Russia planned to use the material to blackmail him.

It is said to have been funded initially by anti-Trump Republicans and then by Democrats, and was handed to the FBI and then leaked to the press.

Mr Steele is the co-founder of Orbis Business Intelligence based in Belgravia and worked in UK’s Moscow embassy in the 1990s.
