A lorry driver has been seriously injured in a three-vehicle pile-up on the M25 motorway.

Two lorries and a van collided on the busy stretch of motorway near Leatherhead, Surrey on Monday morning.

The driver of one of the lorries has been airlifted to St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London, in a serious condition.

A huge fuel leak from one of the lorries has left motorists queueing for hours as work is carried out to make the road safe.

Officers were forced to completely close the road between junctions 8 and 9 at Leatherhead, Surrey following the crash at about 8am.

Police warned those driving in the opposite direction also faced delays due to people stopping to look at the crash.

A spokesman said: "It is hoped that the fourth lane of the motorway will reopen soon but motorists are advised that there are long delays on the clockwise carriageway. There is also a build-up of traffic on the anti-clockwise carriageway due to motorists slowing down to look at what’s going on."

The drivers of the two other vehicles involved in the crash suffered minor injuries, police said.

Witnesses or anyone with any information is urged to call Surrey Police on on 101, quoting PR/P18069150.
