Drivers have been left stranded today after a crash on the M25 sparked motorway gridlock.

The clockwise carriageway between junction 26 (Waltham Abbey) and 27 (M11) was blocked after a car overturned when it collided with a lorry.

Essex Police and other emergency teams were called to the motorway just before 4pm.

The overturned vehicle has been moved off the carriageway and all lanes have now reopened but traffic has stretched back to four-mile queues.

Motorists vented their frustration on Twitter, describing the M25 as a “car park” as drivers cut their engines while emergency work took place.

Jamie Alderson tweeted: “I might be here for some time!! It's that bad I'm actually stood on the M25 itself.”
