Majority 'want troops out of Iraq'

More than 60% of voters want British troops out of Iraq by the end of the year whatever state Iraq is in, a new poll showed.

The Government has refused to set any timetable, with Prime Minister Tony Blair insisting they will stay until the "job is done".

But the ICM poll for the Guardian found that only 30% of the public backed keeping UK forces in place for as long as necessary.

Nearly half (45%) want them brought home immediately with another 16% calling for their withdrawal before next year, regardless of US demands.

ICM Research interviewed a random sample of 1,019 adults by telephone across the country on October 20-22 and weighted the result to reflect the population.
