Man charged over sectarian attack

12 April 2012

A man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a sectarian attack in Northern Ireland which killed one person and left another fighting for his life.

The 34-year-old man will appear at Coleraine Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with the attempted murder of Damian Fleming, 46, who was critically injured when he was attacked by a loyalist mob in Co Londonderry on May 24.

Catholic father-of-four Kevin McDaid, 49, was killed in the same attack in the Somerset Drive area of Coleraine.

Mr McDaid was killed yards from his home when violence flared after a 40-strong loyalist mob stormed into the area near his home after Rangers beat Glasgow rivals Celtic to the Scottish Premier League soccer title.

Six men have been charged with the murder and, together with two more, with the attempted murder of Mr Fleming.

On Tuesday detectives investigating the case arrested a 41-year-old man for questioning.

The suspect was released on bail that night pending further police inquiries.
