A driver died when his car collided with an ambulance on a village road, police have said.

A blue Nissan Micra and the marked ambulance crashed on the A458 at Cross Houses, Shropshire, just after 10.50am on Saturday and both vehicles left the road, a West Mercia Police spokesman said.

The driver of the Micra, a man believed to be in his 50s from the Shrewsbury area, was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor who was passing by and stopped to help.

The ambulance was on non-emergency duty transporting a female patient to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital without blue lights or sirens, a spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

He said the patient being transported to hospital was shaken but otherwise unaffected further by the collision and she was taken to hospital in another ambulance.

Two members of staff in the ambulance involved in the crash were also taken to the hospital.

Richard Topping, divisional commander with West Midlands Ambulance Service, said an internal investigation into the incident had been launched.

He added: "Our thoughts are with the families of all those involved in this tragic crash."

Police are also looking into the circumstances surrounding the accident and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
