A man has died after shooting himself in a town centre.

Officers were called to a property in Southover High Street in Lewes, East Sussex, at about 7.20pm on Tuesday.

A Sussex Police spokesman said the man, who has not been identified, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where he was pronounced dead.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as unarmed officers attended the scene, the spokesman added.

He said: "We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."
