Man in court over pensioner murder

12 April 2012

A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a pensioner.

Martin Phillip Davies spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth during a brief appearance at Newport Magistrates' Court in South Wales.

The 22-year-old from Commercial Street, New Tredegar, South Wales, is accused of stabbing to death Gwen Poole who was waiting to meet her friends for a night out when the incident happened.

The 66-year-old mother-of-two from Llanbradach, near Caerphilly, died in hospital that night after suffering stab wounds to her chest in her home village, a post-mortem examination showed.

Her sister, Phyllis Sweet, said Mrs Poole was due to play skittles for the Llanbradach Social Club's women's skittle team in the nearby village of Bedwas that evening.

The case was adjourned by magistrates chairman Alan Gwyn until Monday when it will come before Caerphilly Magistrates' Court for a committal to Crown Court.

The defendant's solicitor, David Lewis, made no application for bail and Davies was remanded in custody.
