A man who was filmed throwing a milkshake over Tommy Robinson has claimed he is getting death threats.

Mr Robinson, who is running as an independent to become an MEP for the North West, was doused with a milkshake as he campaigned for the European elections on Thursday afternoon.

Footage showed Mr Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, arguing with Danyaal Mahmud, 23, who then drenches him with the milkshake.

But Mr Mahmud said the attention following the incident on Thursday in Warrington, Cheshire, has left him feeling vulnerable.

Speaking to the Observer, he said he is being targeted with abuse online.

He said: “I’m a low-key person, I didn’t anticipate this publicity and I don’t want it – I’m getting death threats on social media and I am worried about me and my family being targeted.”

Mr Mahmud claimed he threw the milkshake over Robinson after he had been approached by Robinson and his supporters earlier in the day.

He told the newspaper he was in the area to meet with an occupational health therapist when he was invited by anti-fascist protesters to join them in confronting Robinson and his group in the town centre.

Robinson then arrived in his van and Mr Mahmud claimed he was immediately targeted, alleging that he was shoved and repeatedly abused.

Mr Mahmud spoke to a police officer but added that he was stopped again by Robinson and his supporters.

"He said that I was aggressive and I couldn’t do s*** so I just threw the milkshake in his face and ducked,” Mr Mahmud said.

Cheshire Police later said they were investigating an incident following an allegation of assault.

A statement said: "We are aware of an allegation of assault made following an incident in Bridge Street in Warrington this afternoon (May 2). We are looking into the circumstances."

It was the second time Mr Robinson had been targeted with a milkshake in two days after a separate video showed a drink being thrown at him in Bury, Greater Manchester, on Wednesday.

Mr Robinson has claimed he is being "politically targeted".

“No amount of punches, milkshakes, attacks or anything is going to stop me,” he said in a video last week.
