Man's body found dumped in canal

12 April 2012

Police are trying to identify a man who was brutally murdered and then dumped in a canal.

A murder inquiry had been launched following the discovery of the body of an "Oriental" man in the water near Selby on Friday, North Yorkshire Police said.

The body could have been in the water for a number of weeks, officers said.

The unidentified man died from very severe head injuries, Detective Superintendent Karnail Dulku said.

The officer said he hoped distinctive labels on the man's clothes would help detectives work out who he was.

Mr Dulku said: "It's a brutal attack and he's been presumably dumped in the canal to prevent them being caught."
