Many without power after storms

12 April 2012

Thousands of people across the country are still without electricity following Thursday's storms which battered Britain.

Around 19,000 households in the east of England alone still had no power on Saturday.

EDF Energy said it had reconnected about 10,000 customers in the last 24 hours, but warned that some householders might not have power until early next week.

An EDF Energy spokeswoman said that around 400 engineers were working round the clock to repair damage to the electricity network.

She said at least 60 extra engineers had been drafted in from other electricity companies as well as from EDF in France.

"Over the past two days EDF network engineers have completed over 1,000 repairs to the electricity network in the east of England," she said.

"The storms which hit the UK on Thursday afternoon caused extensive damage to the electricity network which was the equivalent of one month of faults.

"The repair of overhead lines is arduous work which is being tackled by around 400 engineers working in shifts and supported in teams who work on locating faults and prioritising the work so that repairs which help the largest number of people are carried out first.

"When the storms hit, EDF Energy was ready to activate its contingency plans which meant it had already mobilised teams in readiness. As a result, around 90% of all the customers disrupted by the storm had power restored by Friday morning."

The spokeswoman said that around 29,000 customers were without power on Friday, compared to about 19,000 on Saturday.
